Continental Ride

News Flash!!! – Daily Updates

The continental ride is now taking place and there are daily blog articles during the Italian ride. You can see the latest blog updates on the Latest News page.

Introduction

This year we are riding Italy “Top to Toe” in June. The Italian riders will then join in the 100km Cycle4Life ride on September 4th. This replaces the mass ride from Winchester to Portsmouth during September 2010 which was the prologue to a group of 25 continuing on to cycle all the way to Gibraltar in just 2 weeks.

The ride is scheduled to start on 15th June 2011 in Lugano, Switzerland with Professor Peter Johnson, the CRUK Director, seeing the riders off. The ride will then go through Chiasso, Switzerland into Italy and down to Bologna on 17th June 2011.

The flights, route, hotels and logistics have been organised by the committee and are now in place and booked.

Supporters

Stannah’s Italian subsidiary has been really supportive and are providing a vehicle to support the riders along the route.

SanDisk have helped us by funding the cycle jerseys for the trip for which we are extremely grateful. SanDisk are long-term supporters of the CRUK charity.

Hargroves Cycles have produced the jerseys at cost. They are also providing significant advertising space to promote Cycle4Life for which we are really grateful, and this should increase the number of participants this year.

The 2 Types of Ride

The members of the Italy 2011 Top to Toe continental ride gathered to get in some training.

We have people participating in the ride in one of two categories:

  1. “The Earlybirds” – start at Lugano, Switzerland and ride to the end in Catania, Sicily
    • 950 Miles – 11 days
    • Take the van back to Milan at the end of the event
  2. “The Hardmen” – join at Bologna Airport and riding to the end in Catania, Sicily
    • 750 Miles – 9 days
    • Take the flight back from Catania

Our Riders

The first phase will have Andrew Gibson, Thomas Gibson and James Wadley cycling the first few days from Switzerland to Bologna.

After those first few days, the riders will be joined by 16 other cyclists, namely Jac Samuel, Loraine Williams, Ted Williams, Neil Flesher, Rob Baseley, Steve Young, Adrian Dymond, Sophia Smith, Joe Allnutt, Paul Howell, Guy Poppy, Tim Frank, Joel Frank, Ben Lin, Phil Kilby and Scott Dryburgh.

The principle is that riders cover their costs and all funds raised are donated to Cancer Research UK.
